Summer 2011 Coolest In Almost Two Decades

This summer looks like being Britain’s coldest in almost 20 years, the Met Office says.

Provisional figures show the average temperature this summer has been just 13.63C (56.53F).

The last summer with such a low temperature was in 1993 when the average was 13.39C (58.37F).

A Met Office spokeswoman said the amount of sunshine in August has been just three quarters of what would be expected at this time of the year.

“It has been a changeable summer. We have had some very hot spells such as back in June with temperatures reaching 33C. But equally we have seen much cooler and wetter spells.”

The summer has also seen more rain than last year, 267.7mm compared with 243.88mm last year.
